Gateway Chamber Orchestra - La Pasión

Following their sensational debut performances of Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s work, La Pasión según San Marcos [St. Mark Passion] to pandemic limited audiences, the GCO will again present an all-star cast including the composer’s original creative partners, Mikael Ringquist and Reynaldo Gonzalez-Fernandez. Mr. Gonzalez-Fernandez premiered the title role and is the only person to have performed it, having done so more than 70 times around the globe. This multi-cultural response to Bach's historically significant St. Matthew Passion weaves diverse influences such as salsa, flamenco, Gregorian chant, Capoeira, African drumming, and numerous folk traditions into an entirely new vision of the last days of Christ. The genre-blending work demonstrates the art of storytelling at its best. In his review last season, music critic Joseph E. Morgan commented, “There is just too much to discover in what may be fairly described as the first masterwork of the 21st Century.”
